The three horses involved in the barrier drama that overshadowed the start of the group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes have emerged relatively unscathed and will be in action again soon. Two of them – Faatinah and Orujo – will potentially turn out within a week, the former in the Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield, the latter in a 955 metre sprint at Moonee Valley.

The Quarterback, whose panic attack after he slipped in the gates triggered the drama, will have to trial before he races again to convince stewards by proving his barrier meltdown was a one-off affair.

Connections had been hoping to run him next in the Newmarket Handicap, which he won last year, before heading to Dubai for a rich sprint at the World Cup meeting in late March.

There may now have to be a rethink depending on when he does his barrier trial and how he comes through his ordeal, although those associated with the horse are confident he will not take any lasting effects from the experience and will be as competitive as ever when he next steps out.

The drama at the start of the big race somewhat overshadowed the theatre at the end, when the old warrior Terravista rolled back the clock to score his second group 1 victory in a blanket finish to give the successful trainer/jockey combination of Warwick Farm-based Joe Pride and rider Corey Brown another group 1 winner.

But in the aftermath as much attention was focused on The Quarterback, Robbie Griffiths talented sprinter,  David Hayes Faatinah and outsider Orujo, from Shawn Mathrick's Cranbourne yard, as the principals.

The Quarterback became unruly in the barriers and reared, triggering a chain reaction. Stable representative Don Healy on Sunday said it was thought that the rain that fell before the Lightning had made the turf slippery and the horse fell over as a result and panicked as he was trapped in a confined space.

A quick-thinking barrier attendant went to the horse's assistance and helped to calm him.

"He's got skin off his head around one of his eyes and abrasions on his near side hind leg and he is feeling a bit sore and sorry for himself but he will be all right," Healy said.

"He's never done anything like that before and now we just have to wait and see. I would expect that he will be back swimming and doing light exercise over the next day or two and then he will have to barrier trial for the stewards.

"Sometimes it's just a lottery – he was fit and healthy going into the race and we were hoping he was going to run well before going on to the Newmarket. We will have to see how things are now and plan accordingly."

Hayes said that Faatinah, who was in the next stall to The Quarterback was "absolutely 100 per cent. He trotted up after the race."

He will now go to the Oakleigh Plate, the second leg of Victoria's famous sprint treble, at Caulfield on the bumper Blue Diamond race day next Saturday.

Shawn Mathrick was disappointed Orujo did not get the chance to blaze a trail down the Flemington straight as he, too, was withdrawn having been in the other stall adjoining The Quarterback.

The son of Exceed and Excel did look to have plenty to find on his rivals on the form book, which is why he was rated a $201 chance, but his Cranbourne-based handler thought he was in good enough shape to make a show against the cream of the country's sprinters.

"There's not a mark on him, I am so happy we didn't get the chance to run for $450,000," he said with irony

"We will probably go to a 955 metre race at Moonee Valley. He had trialled so well leading up to the race and I really think he is a very fast horse over the minimum distances."

The delay to the start may well have played into the hands of the old, experienced geldings like the winner, Terravista, and the fourth-placed Flamberge, both seven.

The Lightning was expected to be dominated by the star three year olds Flying Artie and Star Turn, both of whom are expected to become prominent stallions sooner rather than later.

But Flying Artie, although drawn a long way off The Quarterback, also got stirred up in the gates and flipped jockey Damien Oliver off his back and out the side of the stalls.

He was, however, allowed to take part but finished a disappointing seventh having gone off as the $3.60 favourite.

Oliver remounted and afterwards could only say that the horse raced fresh and over-raced in the early stages.

Star Turn put in a much better effort, finishing two short heads behind Terravista and just in front of Flamberge.
