Anthony Cummings always thought the Hobartville Stakes would be the hard one for Man From Uncle to win. But victory at Rosehill on Saturday showed he would only get better and opened up questions about what would be his target for the autumn.

Man From Uncle took until the final stride to get leader Echo Effect to add the Hobartville to his first-up win in the Eskimo Prince Stakes.

"I thought he had won because of the way he just knuckled on late to grab the other horse," Cummings said. "It is one of those runs that makes you think he is just going to be better at a mile and further. He had to dig in late and did enough and he wants to win."

While Cummings was smiling, Wyong trainer Kristen Buchanan was left shaking her head.

"I thought he had won. I don't know if I was hoping but he was brave," Buchanan said. "He is just so honest and we will go to the Guineas and hopefully be able to ride him with a bit a cover and change the result."

Man From Uncle will be waiting in the Randwick Guineas in a fortnight, then the Rosehill Guineas before a choice will have to be made between the Doncaster and Australian Derby.

The Hobartville winner has had a good record in the Randwick Guineas with Dissident and Hallowed Crown completing the double before Press Statement ran second in the Guineas last year.

"He is a horse that's still learning, he'll be a better horse next time stepping up to the mile which will be really good for him," Cummings said.

"He'll go to the Randwick Guineas certainly, Rosehill Guineas most likely. I always figured those two races would see his best runs this prep and that's still looking very much the case.

"After that maybe the Doncaster or Derby but the world's his oyster right now."

Jason Collett said he was always confident on Man From Uncle, who just needed some encouragement to track down Echo Effect.

"It just worked out perfect. I had him in my sight the whole way and always thought I would get him," he said.

"When I saw Comin' Through under the stick at the 200m, which I thought was the danger, I knew we had him.

"But at the 100m I could see the leader had a good kick but a few hard ones behind the saddle was all he needed and away he went. He needs that and he feels like a horse that is only going to get better as we step up."
