A smaller but still determined band of cancer survivors, families and friends have helped make Warrnambool’s Relay For Life a big success.
The event, at the Deakin University oval, began on Friday night and teams of fund-raisers and individuals walked in a continuous relay until Saturday afternoon to raise money for the Cancer Council.
Committee chair Fran Hynes said while figures were still being finalised, at least $80,000 was raised from the 2017 event. About 37 registered teams took part in the event and Ms Hynes said although numbers were about 200 people down on previous years, the relay was still a great success.
“We are very happy,” she said. “It was a fantastic, very relaxed event.
“The weather on the night was just beautiful. There was a full moon, which was a lovely addition to the candlelight ceremony.”
Ms Hynes paid tribute to the organising committee and wider Warrnambool community.
“I want to give a huge thank-you to the community. We couldn’t do it without the support of the community.”
