Having raised her four adult children in the small coastal town, she now manages two neighbouring boutique accommodation sites, farms potatoes and offers agistment in between babysitting her five grandchildren.
Despite being unsure of the move many years ago, Heather says Killarney has won her heart.
She also hopes her children are country kids at heart, too.
Heather answers this week’s Moyne Gazette Q&A series.
What is the best thing about Killarney? The ambiance. The volcanic soil is fantastic for the garden, the beach is so close and you’re close to Koroit, Port Fairy and Warrnambool if you need them. It’s paradise – that’s what visitors to the area say. I can’t believe I didn’t want to leave Warrnambool originally. Now I couldn’t go back.
How has it changed over the years? Killarney hasn’t changed much over the years. There are a few more houses and a few new people have moved into town. Years ago it was just the Gleesons, the Mugavins, the Maddens and the Lanes but now those families are dwindling and new people are coming. There used to be a corner store on the highway, and a petrol station where the antiques store and uggboot place is. Holiday-makers could get an icecream there after a day at the beach. There are still people coming up Survey Lane for onions and potatoes and a chat. The winery is bringing newcomers to the area too, and we have been very busy during the Chinese New Year period.
What is something people might not know about you? I’m keen gardener and I love the races. I also like my water aerobics, too.
Where do you see Killarney in 20 years? I think there will be a few new homes but not much will change. The farming will stay and maybe there will be more agriculture. I know there are more potatoes being put in.
Tea or coffee? Tea
Red wine or white wine? White wine.
Movies or books? Well I have just been to see the movie Lion, it was great, and I’m now looking forward to seeing Fences. As far as books go I’m currently reading Patron Saint of Eels by Gregory Day.
