Traffic and pedestrian diversions were in place for several hours on Tuesday night while police examined whether or not the item was a threat to patients and hospital staff.
A Victoria Police spokesman said the bomb squad attended the scene as a precaution.
"An item has been deemed safe," he said.
Eleanor Street was reopened to cars and foot traffic during the early hours of Wednesday morning.
