THE state government is offering a $250,000 reward for the discovery of the mystical Mahogany Ship. The craft, believed to be a Portuguese caravel, is thought to be hidden along the south-west coast. A positive find could rewrite the history of Australia. More than 20 confirmed sightings have been reported since 1836.

THE Western District’s crime rate could be slashed dramatically if more people became involved in the Neighbourhood Watch program, the new district co-ordinator said.
50 YEARS AGO:
MURRAY Goulburn Co-operative’s $500,000 milk factory at Koroit was expected to be completed at the end of July, the general manager Mr J.J. Maguire said. Work on the factory was likely to begin within three weeks.
A $12,000 plan to convert old workshops at Warrnambool Technical College to modern laboratories for use by the diploma school has been announced. Principal Mr B. Conry said the workshops had been idle since the junior school opened in Grafton Road.
THE SEDCO oil rig is expected to leave Portland within days to drill Shell Development (Australia’s) first oil well, Pecten No. 1, off the Western Victorian coast. The rough weather had delayed the survey for the drilling site, 10 miles from the coast.
WARRNAMBOOL’S growing problems of water for industry and domestic use might be met by water from an artesian bore at Killarney. The bore has a flow of 42,000 gallons an hour and has been pumped to a maximum of 60,000 gallons an hour.
100 YEARS AGO:
BASIL Watson, the well-known young Australian aviator, is visiting Warrnambool with the object of arranging for a flying display in the town in the near future. This event will be the first of its kind in Warrnambool. Mr Watson will fly a machine built by himself from Australian timbers.
DURING the 12 months, ending December 31 of 1916, Messrs Dalgety and Company Limited, Geelong sold 164,107 head of fat and store sheep and 4618 head of fat and store cattle at the highest average prices ever experienced in the Australian livestock business.
