The efforts of Mr Mirtschin have been recognised with the 24-year-old named as the Moyne Shire Council Australia Day Young Citizen of the Year award.
“My family have always encouraged me to be involved,” Mr Mirtschin said.
“The Woolsthorpe community provides a great example for young people to do their bit. Getting involved in community does create opportunities that you can learn so much from.”
In the citation from Moyne Shire on the selection of Mr Mirtschin for the award, his efforts in the fields of education, volunteering and sport were noted.
His leadership ability had him represent Moyne youth at the 2015 Rural Councils Summit and he is an active member of the Moyne Youth Advisory Group for young people 18 years and above.
In his sporting endeavours, Mr Mirtschin is a former senior coach of the Port Fairy Cricket Club and had been involved with the Western Waves and Cricket Victoria.
He has also volunteered for the AFL international program.
With his work, Mr Mirtschin will teach Year 4 at Alexandra College in Hamilton in 2017.
Despite his young age, he will bring with him the experience gained volunteering in Timor Leste and on a brief exchange at Cambridge University in England.
Mr Mirtschin said he is thrilled to win the Australia Day honour.
“It is a real honour, obviously it is something I never thought about,” Mr Mirtschin said.
“Winning something like this is pretty humbling especially when you see what someone like Wally Sheehan has done.
“Wally is so deserving of his award as the Moyne Citizen of the Year.
“He has been huge for me, his advice not just about cricket but life in general has been amazing. He has really made a difference in the community.”
