The Waves’ late fightback fell short against Metropolitan North West on Tuesday.
Portland teenager Sam Roberts’ 46 batting at number 10 almost proved the difference.
Western Waves region manager Stephen Field said it was a hard defeat for the players to accept.
“Unfortunately we’re two-zip down and could have been two-zip up,” he said.
“With a little bit of luck it would have gone our way but that’s cricket. It’s a cruel game.
“(The boys are) gutted because we can’t make the finals the way the system is structured.”
Portland bowler Jordi Withers took 3-15 as Metropolitan North West made 7-194. Russells Creek all-rounder Dominic Bandara contributed 40 and Mortlake’s Isaac Wareham 20 in the Waves’ run chase.
