Port Fairy’s Neville Suter said snake sightings had increased.
“We are in peak season right now. I’ve caught and released 20 snakes since the beginning of November – five more than this time last year. If you find a snake, just leave it alone,” he said.
The advice comes after a Port Fairy resident uploaded a photo of a brown snake found at his property near the showgrounds to a social media site this week.
Port Fairy and Warrnambool have had reported sightings of copperhead, tiger and eastern brown varieties.
Mr Suter urged people to contact their local council or a licensed snake catcher to move the reptile from a property.
