But Koroit residents will have to wait until late 2018 before they can connect to the network.

Construction of the fibre-to-the-node service began in Port Fairy in September last year, and about 2000 residents and businesses are expected to be able to sign-up for the NBN through an internet service provider “from about April 2017”, an NBN Co spokesperson said.

In Koroit, about 840 premises will have access to a fibre-to-the-node network.

The NBN Co spokesperson said the initial plan released in October 2015 scheduled works to start in Koroit in the latter half of 2017, however that plan was just “an indicative view of scheduled build work” and “subject to change”.

“The start date is now in the first weeks of January 2018 and the service should be available by the second half of 2018,” the spokesperson said.

Some residents around the Koroit and Port Fairy areas will already have access to the slower fixed wireless NBN option.

Koroit and Port Fairy residents designated to be connected to the fibre-to-the-node network can not access the fixed wireless option as “each premises (only) receives the technology designated for their area”.

The spokesperson said NBN Co did not know how many people were asking about the network or uptake on the fixed wireless network as “most of the enquiries will be going straight to the retail service providers”.

“(But) there is a big demand for the NBN network throughout Australia, particularly in regional and rural areas,” the spokesperson said.

“We don’t provide breakdowns of fixed wireless at a regional level. However, demand has been fairly consistent across Victoria.”

Further afield, areas such as Orford, Bessiebelle and Codrington will have to contend with the satellite NBN service, which is slower again than fixed wireless.
