Speed restrictions on the Warrnambool train line are the main source of delays, so what are those restrictions, and why are they in place?
Recent speed restrictions were introduced around level crossings following the July collision between a Warrnambool-bound train and a semi-trailer at the Phalps Road crossing in Pirron Yallock.
V/Line said restrictions related to trains travelling through 17 specific passive level crossings – those with only a stop or give way sign – where there is a poor line of sight. In December, the authority introduced restrictions at five more active level crossings with boom gates and lights after a boom gate’s delayed response.
Train drivers can also reduce speeds across the journey due to rough-riding in dated locomotives. Some of the seats are being updated to reduce the impact on drivers, and eliminate the need for restrictions.
Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) branch secretary Luba Grigorovitch said addressing issues around level crossings was a priority.
“Safety around level crossings for commuters and drivers must be paramount,” she said. “Level crossings across Victoria have been neglected for decades, failing to keep up with population and traffic growth. These need to become a priority. Patrons of the Warrnambool line deserve to have the security and accountability of a timeline for these essential upgrade works.”
