Vinall spent 14 years as an arts teacher at Deakin University and remains a key figure, as evidenced by the huge turnout and interest in his 2013 exhibition at the WAG.
His new display at The Artery is his first since then. Fantasies & Experiments features predominantly new works, with the exceptions being a large work that was left out of his WAG exhibition, a piece from a long ago Melbourne residency, and three works from a residency in Chiang Mai.
Vinall said the new exhibition was a combination of being technique driven and delving into the subconscious.
In an attempt to get away from the turpentine fumes of working with oil paints, he said he had resorted to using unusual mixtures of materials to express his “stream of consciousness” style ideas.
“This is a completely different experience (to my WAG exhibition),” he said of his first solo display at The Artery.
