TAC road safety manager Samantha Buckis said there were plenty of things Victorians could do to ensure everyone enjoys a safe and happy summer break. “There’s no reason why everyone can’t arrive at their holiday destination safely, if we all take responsibility for our own driving behavior and follow a few simple tips when planning longer journeys,” she said.

The message follows a tragic year on Victorian roads with 281 lives lost so far in 2016, 126 of these on rural roads. Here are five tips from the TAC to keep yourself, your family and other road users safe this summer:

1. Plan Ahead

Planning ahead is the key to a safe and relaxed holiday. Before hitting the road, plan your route and work out how long it will take to reach your destination.

Look for towns and sites along the way, so you can factor in rest stops and swap drivers every couple of hours.

2. How safe is your car?

A long time on the road can take its toll on your car, so making sure it’s in good condition before embarking on your trip is vital.

Good brakes and tyres could be all that is standing between you and a crash when something unexpected happens.

3. Rethink your speed

With a lot of traffic on the roads, you may need to allow extra time to get there.

Remember to stay within the speed limit and always choose an appropriate speed for the conditions.

4. No distractions

With so much traffic on the roads, even a minor distraction can turn deadly in the event of something unexpected. Come up with strategies to avoid distraction, like putting your phone in the boot and ensuring young passengers have plenty to keep them occupied.

5. Drinking and driving – they’re better apart

An easy one to achieve – even small amounts of alcohol can inhibit your driving ability so avoid it altogether while on the move.
