A visit to the region is incomplete without a gourmet road trip to explore the diverse range of producers who call the hinterland area around Timboon, Cooriemungle and Simpson home.
Nine businesses who make up the 12 Apostles Food Artisans group have their doors and farm gates open across summer, ready to welcome food-loving visitors.
For a perfect family day out, BerryWorld Timboon is open 10am-4pm Tuesday to Sunday. Visitors can pick their own berries among the peaceful surrounds not far from the heart of Timboon.
Timboon Railway Shed Distillery is a hub for fine food in the pretty hinterland town. It serves up meals made with local produce and its still bubbles away to produce fine single malt whiskey.
Just across the creek, Timboon Fine Ice Cream has recently opened its visitor centre. It offers a range of gourmet ice-creams, soft serves and sundaes in modern surrounds.
A short drive away, Newtons Ridge Estate Vineyard, located on Cooriemungle Road, Timboon, has a fine selection of red and white wines. Over January its cellar door will be open seven days a week.
The produce at Apostle Whey Cheese, located at 9 Gallum Road, Cooriemungle, is all handmade on site. Milk from the family farm is piped directly to the boutique cheese factory, helping produce an award-winning range of soft and hard cheeses.
More delicious cheese can be found at Timboon Cheesery, on Ford and Fells Road. Cheeses are made using organic milk produced on the property.
Those with a sweet tooth don’t need to travel far off the Great Ocean Road to find GORGE Chocolates. About 40 varieties are on offer, from chocolate marshmallows to honeycomb, chocolate licorice and rocky road.
Simpson Snails, on Centre Road, gives visitors the chance to sample the classic French delicacy and learn more about how the snails are produced.
