The region’s marine creatures will be showcased from January 2-26 as part of the program, which enables residents and visitors to learn about the environment, while having fun.
Coastcare Victoria co-ordinator Evelyn Nicholson said the program allowed local volunteers to share their knowledge of Victoria’s special coastal and marine environments.
“By showcasing the different elements of our fragile and precious coastline, Summer by the Sea activities develop understanding and appreciation for the landscape,” Ms Nicholson said.
“The 2017 program has something for everyone, with activities ranging from guided walking tours, twilight fishing and rockpool rambles, to dinosaur digs, kite-making and canoeing.
“This year we are focusing on providing accessible activities for people living with special needs, including outdoor exploring on wheelchair accessible trails and snorkelling,” Ms Nicholson said.
There will be rockpool rambles held at Killarney on January 14 and Port Fairy on January 15 and 28.
Port Fairy will also host a nature day on the Fiddler’s Green on January 13, a Griffith’s Island discovery walk on January 17 and a junior fishing clinic on January 19.
Warrnambool will host an early bird walk on January 10, rockpool rambles on January 14,15, 19 and 20, a come and try fishing day on January 6, 13 and 20 and a junior fishing clinic on January 12.
Other highlights include Beachfest 2017 activities from January 8-12 and a Keep our Sea Plastic Free Clean Up day on January 21.
There are also various activities held throughout the month at Narrawong, Peterborough and Port Campbell including penguin watching and the arrival of short-tailed shearwater birds.
Bookings open in late December. For more information go to the Summer by the Sea Facebook page or delwp.vic.gov.au.
Ms Nicholson encouraged people with special needs who wanted to attend to contact Coastcare Victoria to discuss how they can participate.
