Potholes big enough to swim in, roadsides like jungles, asphalt grooves that turn your car into a waterskier when it rains – these are all frequent problems across our region.
But do you know who you should be complaining to? Are you swearing at an incompetent council when you really should be blasting an inept VicRoads? Are you slamming a ham-fisted VicRoads when you should be rebuking a substandard council?
(The real answer is you should be berating state and federal governments for not increasing roads funding.)
We’ve picked 20 well-driven roads around the south-west for our simple pop quiz to see if you know who is in charge of maintenance on which of the region’s roads.
Take the quiz below and then continue scrolling when you’re finished to learn more about who’s responsible for our roads.

Now that you’ve done the quiz, you’ve probably already forgotten which road is looked after by which organisation.
So we’ve put together a handy map (see below) to help you know who to contact in regards to your road concerns.
If your problem is with a VicRoads road, contact 13 11 70.
If your problem is with a council road, click the following links to lodge a service request –
So who’s in charge of what? The short answer is the yellow roads on the Google map below are VicRoads, the white roads are council’s, with a few small exceptions (such as Bridge Road, Bushfield, which is VicRoads).
If you’re still not sure, contact your relevant council or VicRoads.
Most councils also have details on their websites about which roads they manage –
