The Glenelg Hopkins CMA are hoping to combat receding water levels through the release of “environmental flows” to help “plants and animals thrive”.
Water manager Bryce Morden said the flows keep salinity levels down and dissolved oxygen levels up.
He said the water would help to keep fish alive, assisting native and endangered species “spawning events”.
“This flow is a vital leg up for a local species,” Mr Morden said. “This means good things for users of the river.”
Increased water levels are expected to reach Casterton December 27.
Mr Morden said it would be a good year for anglers casting lines across the warmer season.
