The modified version of Australian Rules, which features nine players a side with three zones and no tackling, will start up in Warrnambool on January 6, with men’s, mixed and junior tournaments set to run.
Competition co-ordinator Claire Farrer was hopeful of seeing around 10-12 teams take part in the first season.
“There’s certainly a lot of interest and a lot of people coming along to our training and information sessions we have on Monday and Wednesday nights,” she said.
“It’s open to anyone: kids, men, women – people who are retired from football might like to come back.
“It’s more a social game. It’s a lot of fun to play with the no-tackling (rule).”
Registrations are now open for teams and individuals at AFL9s.com.au. Farrer encouraged anyone interested in having a go or learning more to head to Davidson Oval on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7.15pm.
