Dean Jones, 22, of Harmer Court, pleaded guilty in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court to possessing ecstasy.
Police said that on the night of October 9 Jones was seen walking east on Timor Street.
He ran up a laneway and was stopped by police officers.
There were three ecstasy pills found in the front pocket of his hoodie.
A search then located nine orange pills, six dolphin pills, 10 rectangle pills, eight green capsules and a blue powder believed to be prescription Viagra.
There was a total of 36 pills and capsules with a combined weight of 13.8 grams.
Magistrate John Lesser was told by a solicitor that Jones was an apprentice electrician who bought the pills to use after a trade school break-up.
Jones wanted to try different types of the drug.
He has been stood down from his role as an apprentice and missed a chance to do an overseas traineeship.
Jones described his actions as an "idiotic mistake".
The magistrate said references spoke highly of Jones but he had a lot of drugs in his possession - towards the highest end for personal use.
