Panmure bowler Brad Gedye took two wickets and three catches – including the final dismissal of the game – as the Bulldogs made it three straight short-form flags on Sunday.
The Bulldogs recorded a 26-run win over Grassmere at Wangoom Recreation Reserve.
First-year Panmure captain Paddy Mahony praised Gedye for his poise under pressure, particularly in taking his first catch.
The teenager’s quick reflexes and sure hands sent dangerous Grassmere opener Braden Hotker packing for 37 after the Meerkats had made a solid start to their run chase. Tim Bryce was the Bulldogs’ other standout performer, making 78 as they posted 7-190.
“He laid the foundation and almost batted all the way through,” Mahony said.
“He was probably the difference in the match. He hit the bad balls, got a lot of singles and kept rotating the strike. It was a good opener’s innings.”
Grassmere made a solid start to its run chase before the Panmure bowlers found their range.
“They were flying. It was a bit hairy at the start,” Mahony said.
“But we had five blokes take two wickets...we didn’t drop our heads when their fours and sixes were flying.”
The loss was the Meerkats’ third in the past three grand finals, including a two-day decider, to the Bulldogs.
Skipper Chris Lenehan said they were edging closer.
“I said to the boys that it’s up to us to get better,” he said.
“We played them earlier in the year and were absolutely belted.
“Today was a good contest.”
