A Camperdown man, 21, has been charged over the alleged stabbing and attempted car jacking in Warrnambool eight days ago.
Warrnambool Police CIU laid the charges last Friday after using Warrnambool City Council CCTV footage to identify a man.
A police spokesman said ratepayers should be aware that security cameras in the area captured the incident and led to the identification of a person of interest.
That led to the arrest of the man, who was interviewed and then released on bail to appear in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Monday.
“Money spent on CCTV at the taxi rank greatly assisted in the identification of a person of interest … it’s been money well spent,” he said.
“Officers were able to view the recordings which captured the incident. The security cameras certainly aided the investigating officers,” he said.
Police charged the man with attempted armed robbery of the taxi and intentionally causing injury, after he allegedly stabbed the taxi driver in the stomach with a screwdriver.
