The annual Terang ladies’ event, which is now its 46th year, was named after Saunders’ mother.
“It’s nice to win something named after my mother … it’s the second time I’ve won,” Saunders said.
“It was a very tight contest.
“It’s a bit of luck, in a way. You all go out and play separately (and only learn the scores at the end).”
In beautiful conditions for golf, the competition went down to the wire.
The Terang team of Marion Venn (37 points), Saunders (31), Wilma McDonald (32) and Vicki Philp (28) won on countback.
Their total of 128 equalled that of Warrnambool’s Judy Kerr (31), Di Sullivan (35), Marian McKenzie (31) and Lauren Higgins (31).
Venn also claimed the A grade win with her 37-point game, with fellow Terang golfer Heather Holmes scoring 36 points.
Timboon’s Judy Welsh had the best score of the day, her 39 points also giving her the B grade win from Terang’s Elaide Hrabar on 34 points.
Another local in Lynette Coxon took out the C grade win on countback, scoring 34 points along with runner up Jean Phillips from Lake Bolac. The Stableford event drew 84 competitors.
