The man in his 80s was in Warrnambool Magistrates Court for a committal mention hearing on Tuesday.
He has not been named to protect the identity of his alleged victims.
A police detective previously said the man had been charged with 14 offences relating to two victims.
Solicitor Pat McComish said he was not considering requesting any further materials from police but he had been on holidays and not yet had a chance to go through the full police brief of evidence with his client.
He said his client was very elderly and the allegations went back 42 years.
"I have to conference with my client," Mr McComish said.
An Office of Public Prosecutions solicitor told magistrate John Lesser it was a "pretty strong" case and he expected plea discussions would take place.
The magistrate bailed the accused man to reappear in court on January 27 for another committal mention.
Bail conditions include that he live in Warrnambool, not attend points of international departure, surrender any passports, not contact witnesses and not attend three addresses in Warrnambool.
