The pair fired a two-over par 74 opening round at Kingston Heath in a foursome format.
They rued bogeys on the second, sixth and 18th holes.
They scored one birdie, which came on the par three 15th.
Warrnambool-raised Leishman believes they can fightback in round two and give the host crowd something to cheer about.
"We're only (five shots) back, there are 54 holes left and we've still got our health," he said.
"We're both healthy. It feels very sombre here but it's not that bad."
Spainish duo Jon Rahm and Rafa Cabrera-Bello have a one-shot lead entering day two.
