Laternenfest organising committee member Mandy Nagorcka said the wet winter meant it was harder to source enough hay bales for the competition.
So while there may be slightly fewer to see this year, the quality of the 24 bale displays has been stepped up, she said. “The quality is amazing. It’s quite a fierce local competition,” she said.
The Taylor family has spent hours this year creating a giant white tiger. “It really stands out because it’s white and the blue eyes stand out,” Maree Taylor said.
The winner will be announced on Friday, which is when the annual Laternenfest is held at the school. It runs from 5pm to 9.30pm and features maypole dancing, rides, craft, Steinhold competition – the current record is seven minutes – and finishes with a lantern parade. On Saturday there will be tours and a dinner.
