The October 24 edition of The Standard contained a cartoon by John Ditchburn depicting a soldier with one leg returning from Afghanistan.
We were extremely disappointed and disgusted to see a cartoon in such bad taste in your newspaper.
The return of wounded and damaged soldiers returning from any conflict is never a suitable subject for this kind of “comedy’’ and we would have thought that some consideration would have been given to the effect on returning Diggers and their families. I am certain that they would share our disgust at such poor taste.
We would like to see the newspaper issue an apology to those people and others in the community who would be offended by the content and ensure that future issues show more sensitivity to members of the armed forces and their families, both past and present.
