ANOTHER innings, another century. That’s life for Terang batsman Ben Grinter.
The diminutive Grinter blasted 109 for Terang as it comfortably defeated Boorcan in a division one South West Cricket match on Saturday.
For Grinter, last season’s cricketer of the year award winner, it was his second consecutive ton this season and the fifth from his past seven matches. The 109 came after 115 last week, with his three other triple-figure scores 183, 115 and 127.
Grinter, who has now made six division one tons in his career — the other coming in the 2007-08 season — said he was enjoying the golden run.
He attributed his success to a better mental approach to the game, assessing the bowling and fielding placements more.
“I’ve learnt over the last couple of years you have to pick your ball (to hit),” he said.
“You sweat on the bad ball and keep the good ones out.”
Grinter, who was under a major injury cloud entering the season because of a back injury, said his body had coped better on Saturday than last week’s innings when he had battled twinges and pain.
“For the first two games I’ve felt really confident with the bat in my hands and I feel a lot more relaxed going out to bat.”
Grinter, who gave up the captaincy duties this year because he was in doubt with his back, said the side was well placed with two wins after a round one washout.
“It’s good to get off to a good start. With the one-day format you can’t afford to lose too many games before Christmas. We are happy with the start.”
Grinter said youngster Nathan Monk made his division one debut and showed good promise as an all-rounder.
In other results, Pomborneit stunned Noorat. Pombo dismissed Noorat for 132, seven overs short of its allotted 50, and then got the runs with three wickets in hand.
Mortlake had a comfortable win over Bookaar, thanks to half centuries by Clinton Baker (65) and Todd Schafer (64), who underpinned its 174 all out. Bookaar was dismissed for 113, with Kyle McDonald taking 4-27 from 10 overs.
Cobden earned its second consecutive win, thumping Heytesbury Rebels. Cobden won by 78 runs after captain Leigh Walsh made 52 before his side dismissed Rebels for 70.
