They will be keen to reverse their recent South West Cricket history against Terang when they face them on Saturday after losing by margins of 17, two and seven last season.
Club captain Lachie Green said the team, which narrowly missed out on finals last year, was “itching” to take the field, along with recruit Michael Pegg, who captained Princetown’s division two side last year.
“Michael will probably bat number three – between him and Jono Benallack (we should do very well),” Green said.
Green said Benallack, who was Cobden’s third-top runs scorer last summer, was shaping to have a good summer.
Cobden could be without some of its younger players this weekend with the town’s under 18.5 football team having its end of season trip, while those who played in the senior team could be away the next.
But Green was confident they would have the depth to cover the absences.
“We’ve been getting about 25-30 blokes for training. I’ve worked on a bit of a system that when one goes out, another one takes his place,” he said.
“We’re just trying to build that depth.
“We’ve got some good kids coming up through the under 16s; a couple of those get a chance to play (this weekend).”
The South West Cricket season will start in earnest this weekend, with six of the seven teams set to play matches, while Mortlake has the bye.
