The much-loved Warrnambool City Council child care worker received the devastating news that she had stage three breast cancer in June.
A mastectomy and another surgery to remove the mother-of-two’s cancer and ongoing chemotherapy has meant she hasn’t worked since June, putting a strain on the family finances.
Longtime friends Ruth McLeod, Jane Murphy and Carolyn Pulham stepped in to organise a movie fundraiser screening of Keeping up with the Joneses in Warrnambool on Saturday at 1.30 pm.
A lot of people have said to me ‘I wish I could do something. How can I help?’ so it just snowballed from there,” Ms McLeod said. “People just want to help.”
“I’m blown away actually. It’s been a phenomenal response,” Ms McLeod said.
Ms Murphy said it was a stressful time for the family and thanked the businesses who donated prizes.
“Obviously it’s very financially hard,” Ms Murphy said. “Lizzie cant work. You shouldn’t have to deal with that sort of stuff when your dealing with a serious illness. You shouldn’t have to worry about paying bills and things when you’re really sick.”
“It’s a financial burden but this is one way we can help,“ Ms McLeod said.
There are 12 major raffle prizes. The $20 ticket includes afternoon tea and other prize draws. Tickets available at the door.
