Upwelling fest brings music to foreshore
IN between the environmental activities, markets, art projects and more, there will be some great live music happening at Portland’s Upwelling Festival on Saturday. Live on the foreshore lawns from 10am will be a selection of local musicians, followed by talented south-west teen Cooper Lower, bluesy singer-songwriter Louise Adams, roots artist Kelly Menhennett, and former The Voice contestant Mike Stangel. The entertainment continues later that night at Mac’s Hotel with Stangel and his band.

Songs and stories rise from dust of Uruzgan
AUSSIE singer-songwriter Fred Smith spent two years working as a diplomat in southern Afghanistan alongside Australian soldiers. Out of that experience came a book and an album, both called Dust Of Uruzgan, detailing his experiences and retelling them in story and song. Both works attracted rapturous reviews and acclaim – Redgum’s John Schumann said the album was full of songs he wished he’d written. Smith brings those stories and songs to the Lighthouse Theatre stage tonight.
Borderers return to help Bandari Project
IF you’ve never seen The Borderers perform, where have you been? The Celtic-infused rockers have been regular visitors to the south-west over the past two decades and have been festival favourites, particularly at the Port Fairy Folk Festival and the Koroit Irish Festival. They return to the region on Saturday night to play at St Brigid’s Hall in Crossley. The gig is to raise money for the Bandari Project, the Port Fairy-based organisation which helps disadvantaged children and women in Mto wa Mbu in Tanzania.
