According to the VEC website, candidate Simon Illingworth leads incumbent Peter Harkin with half the vote counted in the coastal ward.
At the close of business on Thursday, Mr Illingworth had received 690 votes and Cr Harkin 320 with 764 of the 1803 votes still to be counted. Mr Illingworth, an anti-corruption campaigner and Port Campbell-based farmer, needs a further 212 votes to achieve a majority 902 for the victory.
Cr Harkin, who joined the council at the last local government elections in 2012, needs 582 out of the remaining 764 to retain his spot on council.
Cr Harkin could overcome the deficit if he can outpoll Mr Illingworth two votes to one.
In the shire’s central ward, four candidates – Helen Durant,Bev McArthur and incumbents Ruth Gstrein and Wayne Oakes – are in the running for three positions around the Corangamite Shire council table.
The provisional results will be announced on Friday at 5.30pm at the Civic Centre in Camperdown.
Official declaration of results will be held on Wednesday, November 2 at 10am.
Results in the shire’s south-central, south-west and north wards have already been decided with incumbents Jo Beard and Neil Trotter and newcomer Lesley Brown elected unopposed.
Provisional results for the Warrnambool City Council election, where 25 candidates are vying for seven positions, will be announced at 10am on Sunday at the electoral office in Liebig Street, Warrnambool.
The public declaration will be on Monday, October 30 at 10am at the Lighthouse Theatre foyer.
In the Moyne Shire, where 17 candidates are standing for seven seats at the council table, residents should know who their councillors are on Saturday afternoon.
A provisional announcement of the council election result will be made soon after 3pm at the Blackwood Centre in Koroit.
Unless there is a request for a recount – which happened in Moyne Shire in 2009 due to a very small number of votes separating candidates Mick Wolfe and Geoff Rollinson – a formal declaration of the new council will be made in Port Fairy on Monday morning.
