A car crash brought down electricity lines on the Nepean Highway at Aspendale, closing the road in both directions and cutting power to hundreds of homes.
A second incident on the Monash Freeway at Chadstone also caused headaches for peak-hour commuters Two right lanes were closed outbound after Warrigal Road, but reopened about 8pm.
Delays stretched from Chadstone back to the Burnley Tunnel.
The roads closures put pressure on other major roads, with the Calder, Eastern and West Gate freeways all experiencing heavy traffic.
Vicroads advised motorists affected by the Nepean Highway closure to consider using South Road to the Dingley Bypass through to Springvale Road, or EastLink instead.
There were also delays on the Boundary Road and Wells Road detour, as well as on Station Street.
The Aspendale crash happened near Alexandra Street, between Edithvale and Aspendale train stations, about 12.30pm.
A man crashed into a pole, causing power lines to come down, but walked away uninjured.
More than 500 properties along the Nepean Highway were without power for some time as a result of the crash.
