The $2 million Wannon Water project is expected to finished by the middle of next year.
Wannon Water’s branch manager of asset creation Simon Perrin said the new pipeline would duplicate the existing sewer that transfers most of Warrnambool’s sewage to the Water Reclamation Plant for treatment near Thunder Point, effectively doubling the pipeline capacity.
“This project is part of Wannon Water’s ongoing commitment to reliable service delivery and is an important proactive measure that will ensure the Warrnambool sewerage system can meet the city’s needs for the next 30 years and beyond,” Mr Perrin said.
The nature of the work will mean nature strips and roads in South Warrnambool will have to be dug up in Harris Street, McGennan Street, Coramba Court, and Elliot Street.
A trench up to 5.5 metres deep will be dug in some places to install the 750-millimetre diameter pipe, resulting in the loss of some vegetation.
Mr Perrin said all options for retaining the existing vegetation along the route of the sewer line were investigated.
“However, some vegetation along Harris Street, north of the Merri River bridge, will need to be removed to allow for construction work to take place,” he said.
“Wannon Water will be partnering with the local Landcare group and Warrnambool City Council to ensure that appropriate revegetation occurs once the project is complete.”
Elliot Street and Coramba Court are expected to be closed on occasion to through-traffic while the project is underway, but Mr Perrin said the contractor would be working closely with local residents to ensure they could still access their properties during this time.
“Access to the rail trail will be maintained throughout the construction period but a detour route along Harris Street will be in place when the works cross the rail trail,” he said.
Wannon Water conducted letter drops in the area and hosted an information session at the nearby Merri View Gallery.
