Walsh said speculation of a Sharks’ collapse circulating on social media was off the mark.

He said the embattled club faced issues with player numbers but was making plans for the 2017 season and beyond.

“We have every intention to move forward as a club,” Walsh said.

“It was our 40th year last year and we have every intention to go on to as many as we can get, to be honest.

“Deakin has committed to us financially again with sponsorship next year.

“At this point in time, for next year I’d go at 98 per cent (for us playing on). There is only a very little possibility of us not being there next year.

“Our junior boys (under 14.5s) made a grand final this year – that is a massive achievement for us.

“I don’t think anyone realises too that if we stop, the junior end stops.”

Walsh said the Sharks’ set-up – being reliant on university students to fill playing positions – meant speculation surrounding their future was expected.

The young leader, who plans for stay on as president for a third year, said the Sharks were working hard to fill necessary appointments. 

"I am not going to lie - if we don't get a coach and we can't get the players, we can't have a side,” he said.

"But at this point in time we're doing everything in our power to get those players and coach and support staff.”
