Athletics Australia announced a revamped summer program on Monday, giving the old track classic series the boot and switching the focus to the states' and territories' championships instead.

The AIS track is one of the fastest in Australia and has produced not only the fastest 100-metre time run by an Australian woman, but multiple world championship and Olympic Games qualifiers as well.

It means the athletes, especially the sprinters, love coming to Canberra and that's resulted in Athletics ACT being rewarded with the SUMMERofATHS Grand Prix — which will be the final tune-up ahead of the national championships in Sydney at the end of March.

The grand prix event will also incorporate the national 5000m championships, which could see national champ Brett Robinson defend his title in his home town.

Canberra will also host the all schools championships and the world cross country selection trials, as well in a bumper summer of athletics.

Wells, who competed in her second Olympics in Brazil, said Canberra was "on the map now" after it spent a few years in the wilderness.

Now it's set to play a major role in Australian athletes' hopes at next year's world championships in London in August.

Wells was back in training after the 400m hurdler made the semi-finals at this year's Rio Olympics.

She was unsure what her plans for the upcoming summer were and said she might focus on running the flat 400m instead of hurdles.

But she'd probably fit the Queanbeyan and Stawell gifts into her plans.

"Athletes only need to look at the results of the last two years and they themselves know what a great facility we've got here," Wells said.

"I think the results speak for themselves over the last few years. It'd be in the athletes' best interest to come to Canberra, particularly with the world championships in mind for next year ... it'll be the perfect time of year to try and knock out a qualifier."

Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Ben Offereins, Athletics ACT's executive officer, said it would to be "close to" the biggest summer of athletics Canberra had ever had.

He was unconcerned the ACT championships clashed with the South Australian ones and was still expecting Australia's top athletes to descend on the ACT, "especially the sprinters".

Offereins said Adelaide tended to attract the longer-distance runners and the throwers, while Canberra was a sprinters and jumpers "paradise".

"We pushed pretty hard for that second high-performance meet in March [the SUMMERofATHS grand prix] because we felt like here's the place to be," he said.

"Everyone comes here and they perform well. Over the last two track classics the number of international qualifiers we've had is quite large and the athletes love coming here as well."

Athletics Australia is still working on luring sprint king Usain Bolt for the Nitro Athletics series, which was planned from February 4-11, but it's not expected the nine-time gold medallist would compete in Canberra.

December 2-4: Australian All Schools Championships.

December 5: Australian Schools Knockout Championships.

January 29: IAAF World Cross Country Championships Selection Trial.

February 17-19: ACT Athletics Championships.

March 11-12: SUMMERofATHS Grand Prix - featuring Australian 5000m Championships.
