The funeral took place at the Warrnambool cemetery, following requiem mass at St Joseph’s Church, attended by a large congregation, including Pte Warburton’s family.
Police escorted the cortege as the casket – draped with an Australian flag, wreath and military cap – was borne along lava street.
A leading detachment marched ahead of the procession with arms reversed and the funeral march played on muffled drums at the rear. Almost 100 cars followed the funeral while hundreds of bystanders stood silently in tribute.
At the cemetery, the leading detachment fired three volleys and buglers sounded The Last Post and Reveille.
