Fairfax Media last night reported the 24-year-old would head to Carlton along with a future first round pick, while a future second round pick will head from the Blues to the Cats.
It came after a surprise AFL ruling opened up the path for Geelong to secure Zach Tuohy from Carlton, as the Cats were given unexpected permission to trade another first-round draft pick.
Smedts, a former North Warrnambool Eagles junior, has endured hard luck with injury throughout his career, with leg, shoulder and collarbone complaints.
He has managed 38 games in six seasons with the Cats. His most prolific season – 2012 – yielded 14 games with an average of 11.9 disposals per outing.
Smedts was Geelong’s first selection in the 2010 draft, going at number 15 – a pick the Cats obtained via Gary Ablett’s move to the Gold Coast Suns.
