Zoffman was well back in the early stages before jockey Dean Yendall tried to make ground but he to have no luck at vital stages. He ran home to finish sixth just under six lengths behind Captain Duffy in the 2200 metre race..
Trainer Aaron Purcell said Zoffman would appreciate the 2500 metres of the VRC Derby.
“It was a good run,” Purcell said. “Dean said he thought he was in the right spot but nothing went his way. He pulled Zoffman out wide but he had to go wider.
“Zoffman went to the line strongly. We’ll push forward to the Derby. We know our bloke will run out a strong 2500 metres there are some others will not do that in the Derby.”
Meanhwhile, Swacadelic with Michael Walker in the saddle ran fifth for Purcell behind the imported stayed Qewy in the $300,000 Geelong Cup.
The Warrnambool Grand Annual Steeplechase winning trainer said Swacadelic’s run had petered out at the end of the 2400 metre race.
“Michael just said the last 100 metres found him out,” he said. “We’ll just keep our options open regarding other spring staying races over the next few weeks.”
The Ciaron Maher stable retained its red hot form when Ruthven won a $23,000 restricted race over 1400 metres. Ruthven has won his only two starts.
