CFA firefighters attended the fire at Tyrendarra East.
Crews were called to the fire at about 9am and it was under control by 2.30pm.
The hay shed, on the Princes Highway, was 100m x 30m in size, with about 1200 hay bales stored inside.
The hay was from last year’s harvest.
District 5 duty officer Steve Giddens said CFA crews responded quickly to the incident, and worked hard to save the structure from being destroyed.
Three water tankers, Warrnambool’s aerial appliance and 19 trucks attended the incident.
Smoke from the fire billowed onto the Princes Highway.
Police directed traffic through the area affected by smoke.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
It occurred only one day after a house at Byaduk was extensively damaged by fire.
