In round one, the Gators held their nerve to win a tight Twenty20 contest against Brierly-Christ Church.
Batting first, the Gators made 6-138 and were then able to restrict the Bulls to 2-135.
Allansford captain Ben Boyd said his team did well to win the game.
“With five overs to go they hadn’t lost a wicket but they needed a run a ball so we just had to keep putting the pressure on,” Boyd said.
“We have some good senior heads in the team and we were able to keep our cool and not panic.
“We pushed the run rate up and then got a wicket and in the end we were able to hold them off.”
The Gators have welcomed back former player Kyall Timms as well as Luke Ryan and Chris Bant from the Grassmere Cricket Association.
Bant top scored against the Bulls with 38 and Boyd is excited about having him on board.
“A lot of people in the WDCA haven’t seen much of him,” Boyd said.
“He is a very good bat and as vice-captain he brings a cool head. He was captain of Panmure and the association’s country week team so he knows plenty about the game.”
This weekend is a Twenty20 double-header for the WDCA with Allansford to play East Warrnambool-YCW on Saturday and Merrivale on Sunday.
Boyd is keen for his team’s good start to continue.
“We had a couple of practice matches and have been training for a while but it was good to get that first game under our belt,” Boyd said.
“It would be great to win both games this weekend. We will be looking for at least one out of two, nobody wants to come away with two losses.
Allansford missed the finals last season, finishing fourth in the Hopkins conference.
