PRIMARY and secondary school students are wanted for two choirs that are being assembled for a ‘Voices for Peace’ concert in Warrnambool.
‘Voices for Peace’ is an initiative of the four Warrnambool Rotary clubs and the Port Fairy Rotary Club with the support of the Port Fairy Folk Festival committee.
Concert spokesman Graham Pennington, from the Warrnambool Central Rotary Club, said choirmasters Liz Jackway and Matt McNamara ready to lead the singers.
Mr Pennington said the idea to stage a ‘Voices for Peace’ concert had sprung from Rotary International’s theme this year of “Peace Through Service”.
Mr Pennington said it was hoped to assemble two choirs, one comprising primary school pupils and the other secondary school students, each with between 15-20 members.
The concert, to be held at the Lighthouse Theatre on March 7, will be headlined by renowned folk singer and songwriter Eric Bogle who has received a peace medal from the United Nations.
Bogle, 68, was awarded the peace medal for promoting peace and racial harmony through his songs and several of his most famous songs tell of the futility or loss of war — the best-known being And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda.
Mr Pennington said the big range in ages of performers reflected the widespread desire for peace. Young people interested in taking part should register with Ms Jackway by ringing 5562 1782 or by emailing erjackway@wideband.net.au by Saturday, November 3.
