WARRNAMBOOL BMX Club’s new Jetty Flat Reserve track is just weeks away from its first competition.
Club president Luke Pretlove said its 2012 Warrnambool Classic was pencilled in for November 4 and would attract riders from Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and Queensland.
“The club is gathering down there doing working bees every night and weekend and the kids are doing sprint training and eagerly awaiting a proper track,” Pretlove said.
“It is very close. It will come down to the last minute. We need to get power hooked up, concreting done at the starting rail and the track surface needs prepped up.
“It’s too late to pull out now. We’ve got pressure from BMX Victoria to run the event no matter what.”
Warrnambool BMX Club’s former base was on Queens Road.
Pretlove said the Jetty Flat Reserve site was cleared 12 months ago in preparation for the shift.
“It’s only 30 metres longer than the old track but it’s got different configurations with 180 degree turns and a more traditional layout than the old track,” he said.
“The start hill is another two metres higher than the old one.”
Pretlove said 150 riders would attract 500 people to the club’s classic.
