He was there again on Saturday – some 62 years later – to see them add a second flag.
The Warrnambool-based fan celebrated the 22-point win with the Bulldog faithful as the club ended the longest current drought in VFL-AFL history.
“A friend gave me a ticket, so I was on my own but there were plenty of Bulldogs around me,” he said.
Fawcett, who caught the train home after the match and “had time for a beer at the station”, said he knew his side was a chance when they were within two points of Sydney at half-time.
“I think when Tom Boyd kicked a goal (I knew we were home),” he said.
Fawcett, 74, said Luke Beveridge handing his medal to injured skipper Bob Murphy capped it off.
“I suppose I cried with everybody else,” he said.
“It was a great gesture. He has been a great coach, no doubt about it.”
