The southern end of Liebig Street was well patronised with a number of cafes reporting strong trade.
A spokesperson from The Back Shed cafe said trade was strong.
“We opened from 6.30am to 3pm and it was busy all day,” the spokesperson said.
“We were flat out for breakfast, lunch and coffees in between. We have only been opened two weeks so this was our first public holiday.”
In the northern end of Liebig Street, a number of retail outlets opened for part of the day.
Most questioned by The Standard said trade had been slower than normal.
Fashion house Sussan opened from 11am to 3pm.
Sales assistant Ally Williams said the morning was the busiest time.
“The first hour the shop was busy but it dropped off after that,” Ms Williams said.
“The customers we had were mostly from out of the area. We had a few from South Australia.”
Joe Francis from Koroit was out and about in Liebig Street enjoying something to eat and drink.
Despite taking the opportunity to catch up with friends, Mr Francis did not sing the praises of the public holiday.
“I found it an annoyance, there were no buses which makes it hard when you live out of town,” Mr Francis said.
“I love my footy but I think if people are going to travel to go to the grand final then they will still do that if it is a public holiday or not. I don’t think we need the day off before the game.”
