Those heading out of the city for the long weekend, or travelling to Melbourne Airport, faced delays on the freeway following the crash near English Street, Essendon, about 7.30am on Friday.
"It appears the taxi's LPG tank ruptured in the crash," Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokesman Bruce Weaver said.
Three outbound lanes were closed, as well as one inbound lane, while firefighters hosed down the taxi to disperse the gas and ensure it did not ignite.
Traffic was banked back on the freeway either side the incident for about a kilometre, a VicRoads spokesman said.
He said the lanes were expected reopen by 10am.
