Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria committee member and Charolais breeder Noelene King said she was thrilled with the sale outcome.
“What a comeback,” Mrs King said.
“The prices were very healthy and we were thrilled to embrace technology that saw us have bids come in from across the country.”
The first lot to be offered for sale topped the event by reaching $14,000.
Waterford Lady Gina L33E (P) kicked off the sale, and after spirited bidding in front of a large crowd, it was eventually knocked down to Ron Johnstone, Milford Charolais, Beaudesert, Queensland, who bid via the phone through Elite Livestock Auctions.
The one year-old heifer went on to win supreme junior champion beef breed heifer on Monday.
Vendors Deborah and Sapphire Halliday, Waterford Charolais, Mount Macedon, were thrilled with the price that exceeded their expectations.
“It’s absolutely wonderful. We’ve worked for nearly 20 years and it’s paying off,” Sapphire said.
“We put our heart and soul into the cattle.”
Mr Johnstone said it was the first time he’d purchased an animal from Waterford Charolais stud, but said it had a reputation for turning out good cattle. He picked the heifer for her breeding – she’s by Palgrove Hermes (P) and out of DSK My Gina D23E (P) – and her potential in future shows and sales.
He had friends who were in Melbourne who were able to inspect the heifer and he said they, other bidders and the judges had been impressed by her.
Mr Johnstone plans to show her at next year’s Ekka in Brisbane, where this year he won the beef interbreed Champion of Champions cow or heifer, and champion Charolais cow or heifer.
Two lots sold for for the equal second highest price of $9500.
The first lot sold at $9500 was heifer Rangan Showgirl L83 (AI) (ET) (P), knocked down to account B&P Crowley Builders Pty Ltd, through Rodwells Mansfield. It will join the family’s Apriash Charolais stud, Barjarg, after being shown Benalla by breeder Graeme Cook.
The second lot at $9500 was Ashwood Park Freedom (P) – a six year-old cow with her fourth calf, a bull, at-foot.
Directly after the sale, Mrs King said all lots had sold; with the one passed in lot, a young bull, selling for $3000.
