“We shake our heads sometimes,” Senior Constable Rook said.
He said he worried people became complacent about getting from point A to B, with a woman caught travelling at 126km/h in the wet travelling towards Warrnambool from Hamilton.
“Drive to the conditions,” Senior Constable Rook said.
“The speed limit is 100km/h but that doesn’t mean you have to do 100, that’s the maximum.
“It makes me think people need to focus more and concentrate on what they’re doing.”
He said he had read studies which showed a high number of accidents occurred within five kilometres of a person’s home.
“I’ve found that to be true quite a lot,” Senior Constable Rook said.
He labelled some of the excuses as “ridiculous”.
“It’s fair to say that almost all the excuses that are provided are not reasonable or rational or relevant,” he said.
Excuses have included:
- I was lighting a cigarette
- The sun got in my eye
- There is a bee in my car
- I was changing a CD
- I was sending a text
Senior Constable Rook is also searching for the owner of a ladies bicycle which was found at the Macarthur Recreation Reserve.
