The theft of a Warrnambool man’s silver Toyota Aurion sparked a high-speed pursuit along the Princes Highway on Saturday.
Several people claimed on The Standard’s Facebook page to have been run off the road by the chase, narrowly avoiding collisions.
The driver of the Mercedes later abandoned the pursuit.

One youth was immediately caught by police and the other was apprehended a few hours later while waiting to catch a train back to Melbourne.
The teens face charges including theft of a motor vehicle, conduct endangering live, unlicensed driving, handling the proceeds of crime, driving in a dangerous manner, and numerous other driving offices.
SATURDAY: A 14-year-old from Altona is in custody and another youth is on the run from police after stealing a car in Warrnambool on Saturday morning.
Warrnambool police Sergeant Callum McKinnon said the owner spotted his silver Toyota Aurion vehicle at the BP near the Flying Horse about noon on Saturday.
The car was stolen from Martin Place in Warrnambool between 11pm Friday and 7am Saturday.
Police said the owner of the vehicle pulled up in front of the stolen car in a gold Mercedes at the BP to thwart their getaway, but was rammed by the youths as they left the service station.
Both cars then headed along the Princes Highway towards Terang, with the driver of the Mercedes in pursuit of the Aurion, while other motorists called police to report witnessing dangerous driving and overtaking by the two cars.
The driver of the Mercedes later abandoned the chase.
Sergeant McKinnon said police caught up with the stolen car at the Terang service station and the pair fled upon seeing police.
He said the pair drove to the Terang Train Station where they abandoned the Aurion and fled on foot. One youth was caught by police, and the other, a 14-year-old from Melbourne suburb Kealba is still on the run.
Sergeant McKinnon said the 14-year-old Altona youth was under arrest at the Warrnambool Police Station and was assisting police with their enquiries. He is yet to be interviewed and could face an out of sessions court hearing.
Police units from Warrnambool, Camperdown and Cobden attended.
Sergeant McKinnon said police were in Terang looking for the male. He encouraged residents to lock their vehicles and asked residents if they see anyone acting suspiciously to observe their movements and call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Sergeant McKinnon appealed for any witnesses who saw the pair driving on the Princes Highway to contact the Warrnambool Police Station on 5560 1333 or the Camperdown station on 5593 1000.
