The study will look at possible improvements to passenger services including the potential for passenger rail shuttle services that would connect the south-west and the Wimmera to the existing broad gauge service at Ararat.
Southern Grampians is partnering with seven other local governments and the state and federal governments in the $72,000 feasibility study.
Southern Grampians mayor Peter Dark said the study would investigate the possibility of reintroducing rail because all the evidence suggested rail increased public transport patronage. Having public transport available enabled people to age in their place and better access education and work, he said.
