The highway will close from September 12 between Baillie and Gallop streets and Bruce Street in Colac East. It will reopen at the end of October.
A detour will be in place via Flaxmill Road and Clark Street.
The work is part of the $363 million highway duplication between Winchelsea and Colac.
VicRoads project director Tim Price said the bridge works would involve replacing the existing safety barriers.
“We’ll also be upgrading the road surface across the bridge,” he said.
Mr Price asked motorists to be patient during the works.
“There will be changed traffic conditions on the detour. Drivers are urged to observe the roadwork signage, including temporary speed reductions,” he said.
“Over the last two months, contractors have been applying carbon fibre to the underside of the bridge to strengthen it.
“We have B-Double trucks and agricultural machinery coming in from the south west, so it’s important that we have structures that can withstand those loads now and into the future.”
